Perseverance With a Dash of Bravado Equals Awesome Sauce

by Melody Jean

Persevere Bravado Contemporary SeekerI just love the word perseverance. For a multitude of reasons really – from the way it rolls off my tongue when I say it, to the positive energy it emits, to the actual experience of persevering. Perseverance is just awesome sauce.

The Meaning Behind the Word

My only wish is that it was easier to spell, but that’s where comes into play, and spell check – ha! According to the site, the definition of perseverance (per·se·ver·ance) is:

1. steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

2. Theology . continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation.

Four Years and Two Months

Tonight I’m grateful for perseverance. It’s not easy to keep picking yourself up, defeat after defeat. Or opening doors, when they’re rapidly closing.

I’ve been searching for an answer for four years and two months, but who’s counting? This girl. It’s been a long four years and two months, and finally, today, it seems I likely found one.

While elated, I’m trying to not allow my hopes to climb too high. I’ve been here before, you see. Where I felt this close, or I thought that I was finished, and my quest for this answer was over.

Yet, it wasn’t. It was never done; until perhaps today.

The Road Named Perseverance

For more than four years, I’ve been forced to keep this issue at the forefront of my existence. Tackling it, especially when I had no choice because of circumstance.

There were moments too when even though I knew it wasn’t over, I had to relent, and place it on a shelf. Yet, it was never forgotten. So I’d take it down and resume the fight. This battle I fought, was one which few knew. Those near and dear cheered me on, others weren’t the wiser.

With that, tonight, I sit hugging and loving perseverance. Even if this isn’t it, I know an answer is near and, well, I did it. I persevered.

While the answer ironically brings obstacles of its own, somehow I know that I will endure. I will see it through. Yes, I will persevere. “It’s hard to beat the person who never gives up.” Couldn’t have said it better myself babe; Babe Ruth, that is.

A Dash of Bravado

To persevere takes a sense of Bravado I think. That is, courage shown through a false sense of bravery.

One of my favorite songs by Rush called Bravado exemplifies this element. The trials and tribulations of needing to persevere, as I have, over a long period of time is no easy feat. Yet, I truly believe we all have it in us to do so.

I share below the lyrics to Rush’s Bravado from their Roll the Bones Album. You can listen to it here on YouTube. I promise that you will not be disappointed. The lyricist of Rush, Neil Pert is unlike any other – his work is of another dimension.

This song is magical and it perfectly underscores this charmed feeling that I am blessed with tonight. Enjoy!

Bravado by Rush

If we burn our wings
Flying too close to the sun
If the moment of glory
Is over before it’s begun
If the dream is won
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

When the dust has cleared
And victory denied
A summit too lofty
River a little too wide
If we keep our pride
Though paradise is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

And if the music stops
There’s only the sound of the rain
All the hope and glory,
All the sacrifice in vain
And if love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost
